Stepping stones that play healing music, for students with nowhere on campus to put stress down.
Zhang Wenyu 张文钰 · Product & Interaction Design
I design for people and needs that are easily overlooked: patients who dread mealtimes, truckers alone above 4,500 m, students with nowhere to put stress down, children caught between toys that are too simple and instruments that are too hard.
Four projects, one for each season of the garden.

A neckband and game that turn swallowing rehab into daily practice at home for Parkinson’s patients.
Instrument tokens and touch zones for 3–6-year-olds, between toys too simple and instruments too hard.
A survival cockpit and offline mesh network for truckers above 4,500 m on the Qinghai–Tibet Highway.

Hi, I’m Zhang Wenyu. I graduated from Communication University of Zhejiang in Digital Media Art, specialising in interaction design, and I’m currently involved in human–computer interaction (HCI) research.
I’m curious by nature: I like observing everyday life and exploring different fields, and outside design I do photography, calligraphy and running. I’m used to finding questions worth thinking about in daily life.
Rather than chasing technical novelty for its own sake, I care more about people and needs that are easily overlooked, such as the difficulties of specific groups, emotional wellbeing, and the relationship between people and technology. I want to combine the empathy of design with the ability to build, so that good ideas don’t stay as concepts but actually improve people’s lives.

Calligraphy is a long-term practice of mine: classical poetry in small regular script, the brush on everyday objects, and lettering for film titles, where a few strokes have to carry the mood of a whole story.

Inspired by the ocean and the creatures in it, with jellyfish as the main reference for its flowing, transparent structure. We worked with blue organza ruffle lace, corrugated mesh, nylon net scalded with fish-scale film, pearl-wave lace and hand-kneaded paper. A basic white dress became a sea-inspired gown with a diagonal blue hem and an abstract ruffled organza top; a jellyfish hat was built from paper and iridescent fabric with a glue gun, and the second outfit was embellished with beads, rhinestones and hand-sewn fabric flowers.
